The 8(a) Business Development Program

Often talked about as the best federal certification to have, the 8(a) Business Development Program certification is a 9 year program. This certification can only be held once in a company’s lifetime, so it is best to ensure you are ready to take on this endeavor and reap the benefits that come with it. Eligibility To Become An 8(a) Certified Company (as of SEPTEMBER 29, 2023)

  1. Be a small business as determined by NAICS size standards.
  2. Business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by U.S. citizens socially who are socially and economically disadvantaged. 
  3.  Have a personal net worth that does not exceed $850,000, adjusted gross income that does not exceed $400,000 or less, and assets totalling  $6.5 million or less.
  4. In the past two years of business sales, no more than 70% of that revenue can be from one single client.
  5. Demonstrate the potential for success such as having been in business for two years.
  6. Demonstrate good character.
